Legendary Whitetails Blog Contributor Wins Top Honor

Steve Sorensen

Legendary Whitetails blog contributor Steve Sorensen took home the top “Excellence in Craft” award from the Pennsylvania Outdoor Writers Association on May 20th, held in Grantville, PA, for an article called “Nun Sense” about the controversial St. Marys, PA deer hunting nun.

Sorensen won a total of three first place awards. “Nun Sense” won first place in the “White-Tailed Deer Award” category. He also won the top award in the “Outdoor Blog Entry Award” category for his piece titled The Nun’s World Famous Deer Hunt posted on the Legendary Whitetails blog on December 5, 2016. In all, 28 First Place “Excellence in Craft” winners were considered for the “Best of the Best,” recognized and awarded by the National Rifle Association. “Nun Sense” rose to the top in the crowded field.

Nun's world famous deer hunt

“Nun Sense” is about the Roman Catholic nun who, for her deer hunting exploits, received vicious criticism from around the world. Sorensen considered the nun’s story from the point-of-view of the theology of hunting, and his article appeared in the November 2016 issue of North American Whitetail magazine. The blog entry at Legendary Whitetails details the hunt, read it here.

Sorensen is a contributor to several national and regional magazines, and contributes to blogs for Legendary Whitetails and Havalon Knives. His newspaper column, The Everyday Hunter®, appears bi-weekly in the Olean Times Herald, the Jamestown Gazette, and the Forest Press. He also speaks frequently at sportsman’s shows and church-sponsored sportsman’s banquets throughout the eastern United States.

Previously Sorensen won “Best Newspaper Column” three times from POWA, and in 2015 he won the national “Pinnacle Award” from the Professional Outdoor Media Association.
